Alfred Hayes Rust the son of Roy Hamilton and Lola Mable (Hayes) Rust was born September 9, 1926 in Mount Ida, Arkansas and departed this life on March 21, 2017 in Tulsa, Oklahoma at the age of 90 years, 6 months and 12 days.
Alfred served his country proudly in the U.S. Army 3rd Engineers Combat Battalion from October 1946 - March 1948. He was attached to the 24th Infantry Division at Kokura, Kyusha, Japan where he supervised the construction and repair of buildings, drainage systems, bridges, and other structures. He received the WWII Victory Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal - Japan. Alfred earned a Master's Degree in Education and he taught Industrial Arts and coached. He taught at Sperry Public Schools for 20 years where he coached High School and Jr. High Football, Boys Basketball and Track. He later moved to Grandview Schools where he taught for over 10 years and was also the Vice Principal and a Bus Driver. He was Baptist by faith and a member of the Park Hill Baptist Church for many years. He served his community in many capacities such as being a member of OEA, Chamber of Commerce board for over 2 years, Chairman of the Cherokee County Democrat Party for 6 years, Chairman of the Cherokee County Election Board for 16 years, Chairman of the Christmas Parade and Christmas Lighting Committee as well as many other different organizations and activities. Alfred touched many lives over the years and will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Letha Mae Rust; his brother James Roy Rust, who died in WWII; and his sisters Ruby Ferguson, Lenore Scott, Faye Parks and Mickey Shackelford; grandson Kevin Caviness.
He is survived by a loving family which includes his children Gary Don Rust and wife Laura of Rose, Rhonda Lane of Broken Arrow and Kim Caviness and husband Ray of Tahlequah; his brother Joe Dell Rust and wife Martha of Elkin, NC; his grandchildren Stacy Lane and wife Thayl of Broken Arrow, Joseph Caviness and wife Dana of Tahlequah, Major Dawn Mitchell of Broken Arrow, and Beth Parris and husband Teddy of Tahlequah; and his great grandchildren Dakota Mitchell, Mallory Mitchell, Kevin Parris, Dylan Parris, Lexi Lane, Laci Lane, Honesty Caviness, and Danika Spaulding. Numerous nieces, nephews, friends and other relatives also survive him.
