Bettye Poteete

June 14, 1924 — November 3, 2015

Bettye Jayne Poteete the daughter of Fred and Adah (Hindman) Davis was born June 14, 1924 in Muskogee, Oklahoma and departed this life on November 3, 2015 in Tahlequah, Oklahoma at the age of 91 years, 4 months and 20 days.

Bettye grew up in a multi generational family with her aunts and uncles because she was an only child. She attended Franklin Grade School, West Junior High and graduated 5th in her class from Muskogee Central High School in 1942.
It was war time and an airfield was being constructed south of Muskogee. Bettye became one of the original Civilian Cadre at the Muskogee Army Airfield. At the end of the war they closed down the active Air Force Operations
there at the airfield and she was transferred to the VA Regional Office where she worked for the Insurance Officer. On September 7, 1947 Bettye married Warren Dale Poteete and they moved to Westville, OK where they lived until 1954
when they moved their family to Tahlequah. Since 1954 Bettye has been an active member of the First Baptist Church in Tahlequah. She worked as a secretary at Sequoyah Elementary for 22 years and then worked for the
Tahlequah School Board until retiring from Tahlequah Public Schools. Bettye served in many different capacities in Tahlequah. She was a Registrar for over 16 years for the Cherokee Capital Chapter of the Daughters of the
American Revolution. She was a Girl Scout leader for troop 94 for over 10 years and was a Lifetime member of the Girl Scouts of America. She was a Lifetime member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Military Order of the Purple Heart,
and she volunteered for RSVP at NSU River City Playhouse through July 2015. She was a Sunday school teacher and taught Vacation Bible School. She loved children and being a servant to her community. She received the
President's Circle award from Northeastern State University. She celebrated her 90th birthday at the Thompson House where she was a member of the Friends of the Thompson House.
Bettye touched many lives over the years and will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband Warren Dale Poteete.

She is survived by a loving family which includes her children Marthanda Beckworth and husband Terry Kluck of Tulsa, Nancy Beth Poteete of Norman, Diane Dale Johnston and husband David of Muskogee, and
Fred Poteete and wife Ruth of Tahlequah; her grandchildren Amanda Poteete of New York City, Asa Poteete and wife Chelsea of Sapulpa, Ana Jayne Poteete of Tahlequah, Ara Eliot Poteete of Edmond, Wesley Johnston of Stillwater,
and Philip Johnston of Muskogee and her great grandchildren Asher Troy Poteete and Craeton Ace Poteete both of Sapulpa and Axel Dale Poteete of Tahlequah. Many nephews, friends and other relatives also survive her.
The family is especially grateful to the Staff of the Cherokee County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for their kindness and help to the family over the past several weeks.

In lieu of flowers the family would like donations to be made to the Warren and Bettye Poteete Memorial Scholarship fund at NSU.
