Doris Hinds

July 15, 1924 — February 4, 2015

Doris Squyres Hinds the daughter of Earl and Clara Squyres, was born July 15, 1924 in Hulbert, Oklahoma and departed this life on February 4, 2015 in Tahlequah, Oklahoma at the age of 90 years, 6 months and 20 days.

Doris committed her life to her family, church and community. She was very civic minded and was a former President of PEO, and Soroptomist. She was one of the founders of Help In Crisis and along with Charlie Soap and the late Wilma P. Mankiller started the Boys and Girls Club in Tahlequah. She was a member of the Democratic Women's Society of Cherokee County, the NSU Foundation, the Methodist Women, Delta Zeta Sorority and was active in many other civic clubs and organizations. Doris and Bill were honored as Outstanding Alumni of NSU. Doris married Dr. Carl Gerald Ewing and after his death, married Bill Hinds in 1960. Together Bill and Doris successfully blended their families and operated Hinds Department Store. Doris used her impeccable sense of style and talent to organize many Fashion Shows for the enjoyment and/or fundraising for various civic and community organizations. Doris and Bill embodied the spirit of Tahlequah and through their combined efforts, dedication and commitment to the community helped establish the foundation of the Tahlequah that we enjoy today.

Doris touched many lives over the years and will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Bill Hinds Sr.; and her brothers Max Squyres and Rayberne Squyres.

She is survived by her children William H. Hinds Jr. and wife Sharon of Arlington, TX, James I. Hinds of Tahlequah, Laura Diane Ewing Hinds of Tulsa, Jack Russell Hinds and wife Leeanna of Fayetteville, AR and Stephen G. Ewing Hinds of Moore; her sister Earlene McJunkin of Colorado; 10 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Many nieces, nephews, friends and other relatives also survive her.
