Helen Joan Chapman, 90, of Afton went home to be with the Lord on March 18, 2020. She was born June 3, 1929, in Huntingdon, PA to Charles and Stella (Souders) Herncane. After graduating from Huntingdon High School she enrolled in the Pennsylvania Hospital School of Nursing in Philadelphia, graduating in 1950 with her RN. While in nursing school she met and married Frank Chapman, her husband of 58 years.
Helen retired from the Indian Health Service as a nurse at Hastings Hospital in 1994 at age 65. She worked as the Cherokee County health nurse, school nurse at Sequoyah High School, med-surge nurse at Shiprock Hospital, Shiprock, NM, head nurse recovery room Phoenix General Hospital, Phoenix, AZ, and med-surge nurse Hastings Hospital, Tahlequah, OK. She enjoyed reading, knitting, and golf cart rides until her health would no longer allow her.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Frank, daughter Janice (Chapman) Johnson of Tahlequah, sister-in laws Wanda Tehee of San Luis Obispo, and Barbara Metcalf of Tulsa.
Surviving her are her son Sam Chapman of Afton, sister in-law Delorse (Chapman) Manship and husband Arlie Manship of Tahlequah, one gradnchild, two great grandchildren, six nieces and nephews, sixteen great nieces and nephews, many cousins and other relatives, friends, and loved ones to numerous to mention.
The family of Helen Chapman would like to extend a special thank you to the family of the Grove Church of Christ and the South College Church of Christ, their family at Grand Lake and in Tahlequah for the care and concern given their loved one and themselves.
