James Kennicutt

James Darrell Kennicutt was born on February 7, 1932, in Cherokee County at Mud Valley. J. D. was one of ten children born to parents, Claud and Onie Kennicutt. He passed from this life on January 17, 2026, in Tahlequah, Oklahoma.

J. D. graduated from Tahlequah High School in 1950. He joined the army at the age of 18 and spent two years in service then later joined the Air Force and served for four years. J. D. served in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars and was very proud to be a veteran.

J. D. attended Northeastern State University where he obtained his BA in Social Studies. After college he worked in the oil field selling equipment. Then started his career in education where he taught and coached in Oklahoma and Arizona. He also obtained his Masters in Psychology and Counseling at Northeastern State University. He retired from education in 1988.

J. D. enjoyed fishing, the outdoors, and OU football. He was a member of the Cherokee Nation and was proud of his native heritage. J. D. was of the Christian faith and attended Park Hill Presbyterian Church for many years. J. D. married Billie Ruth Parris who was a childhood friend later in their lives. They enjoyed all their years together along with spending time with her family. Billie's sister, Frankie, and her husband, Al Herrin shared many adventures with them. J. D. grew very attached to Al and Frankie's children and grandchildren and will be greatly missed by all of them. He is survived by his sister; Hazel, and brother; George, and many nieces, nephews, and friends. J. D. was a kind, loving man who cared deeply about all those he loved and will be missed by all those who knew him.

Graveside services will be held at Ross Cemetery on January 21, 2026 at 11:00 for friends and family.
