Jefferson Vaughan

Jefferson (Jeff) William Vaughan was born May 30, 1925 in Vinson, Oklahoma to Oma Mae (Keesee) and Robert Vaughan. His Lord and Savior called him home on February 7, 2023 at the Cherokee County Nursing & Rehab Center in Tahlequah, Oklahoma at the age of 97 years, 8 months and 7 days.

Jeff grew up in Harman and Greer Counties. He later worked in produce in Mangum, Oklahoma. On July 13, 1943 he joined the Navy and was honorably discharged March 24, 1946. Upon returning back to Mangum, Oklahoma he met and later married Betty Jean Powers in Wheeler, Texas. They made their home in Altus, Oklahoma where they started their family: daughters Carol and Patricia. Jeff and Betty later divorced. In 1958 he moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma to work at the United States Postal Service until his retirement on March 31, 1992 after 34 years of service.

In 1961, Jeff married Nancy Sue (Rutherford) Vaghan. they were married 58 years before her passing in 2019. They had one daughter, Sheila Susan Vaughan. Jeff and Nancy resided in Hulbert, Oklahoma and spent a brief period of time in Chicago and Texas where Jeff continued his career with the United States Postal Service and Nancy worked for Texas Instruments. Upon retirement, they returned to Hulbert. Jeff enjoyed spending time with his family, traveling, and watching football, especially OU and the Dallas Cowboys. Jeff was a long-time member of the First Southern Baptist Church of Peggs, where he was an Elder and Sunday School teacher. He was beloved by his church community, many friends and neighbors.

He is survived by daughter Carol Wilhelm of Elk City, Oklahoma, two grandsons: Dee Wilhelm and wife Tammy of Elk City, Oklahoma, Jason Wilhelm and wife June of Elk City, Oklahoma; four great grandsons: Lane Wilhelm and wife Stevie of Elk City, Oklahoma, Tyler Wilhelm of Elk City, Oklahoma, Bailey Wilhelm and wife Baylee of Elk City, Oklahoma, and Brendan Wilhelm of Weatherford, Oklahoma; and eight great grandchildren: Stratton Wilhelm, William Wilhelm, Sawyer Lane, Brewer Lane, Nikoli Battles, and Sabor Wilhelm all of Elk City, Oklahoma, April Lane and husband Kelly of Elk City, Oklahoma, Amy Battles and husband Bobby of Elk City, Oklahoma;. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Nancy Sue Vaughan, Sister Viola Ford, Daughter and son-in-law Patricia and Wayland Roden, daughter Sheila Susan Vaughan, and grandson Jeff Roden.

Graveside Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 25, 2023 at the Hew Home Cemetery.
