Mr. John Freeman Meigs, 96, a proud American Indian born on June 26, 1927, in Park Hill, Oklahoma, to the late Cooie Meigs, Sr., and Gertie (Jones) Meigs. He passed away on April 19, 2024, at Fort Gibson Nursing Home.
A respected descendant, Mr. Meigs was the 2nd great-grandson of Chief John Ross of the Cherokees. His dedication to education was evident as he attended Park Hill School District 51 and later graduated from Bagley High School, where he actively participated in the FFA. His pursuit of knowledge led him to graduate from Watchmaking School at Southwestern State College in Weatherford, Oklahoma.
A dedicated patriot, Mr. Meigs served in the US Army and married JoRetta McKinney on December 26, 1950, in Stilwell, Oklahoma. His professional endeavors were marked by his role as a truck driver and sales representative for Griffin Grocery in Muskogee for nearly 24 years. Following his retirement, he served with distinction as a manager for the Lost City Rural Water District 11 for 15 years. For a short period of time, he, and his brother, Cooie Jr., worked in the jewelry business together.
His commitment to community service was exemplified through his role as a member of the Lake Region Electric Cooperative Board of Trustees from 1994 to 2006. Fostering a deep sense of spirituality, Mr. Meigs was a loyal member of Peggs Community Church since 1962, where he served as Superintendent.
Apart from his professional and civic contributions, he found joy tending to his cattle, gardening, and hunting. He was known for his unwavering commitment to his faith, family, and community.
Funeral services to celebrate the life of Mr. Meigs will be held at Peggs Community Church on Tuesday, April 23, 2024, at 2:00 pm. Following the service, his burial will take place at Tahlequah City Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Monday, April 22, 2024, at Hart Funeral Home from 5 PM until 7PM.
In memory of his legacy, Mr. Meigs will forever remain in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him, and his contributions will be cherished for years to come.
John was preceded in death by his parents, beloved wife of 56 years, JoRetta (McKinney) Meigs, sisters, Jewell Gibson Mahaney, Mary Jane Meigs, and Frances Meigs Goodnight, brother, Cooie Meigs, Jr.,
Survivors include his children, Retta Gayle Meigs and her husband Kenneth Terrell, Terence Meigs and his wife Dr. Starla Meigs, grandchildren, Tiffany Meigs and Ashton Meigs, along with several nephews, nieces, and a host of special friends.
