Margaret Louise James

Margaret Louise Billey James, 76, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, teacher, mentor, and friend, peacefully entered eternal rest on July 21, 2026, in Tahlequah, Oklahoma.

She was born August 13, 1949, at the old Indian hospital in Talihina, Oklahoma. Margaret was the eldest of four children born to Rayson Billey, a decorated World War II veteran, minister, and lifelong resident of Keota, Oklahoma, and Betty Francis Billey, whose spirit and steadfast Christian faith became Margaret’s lifelong example.

As a full-blooded Chahta (Choctaw) and Mvskoke (Creek) person and a citizen of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, Margaret lived the legacy of her ancestry with dignity and pride. As the elder of her family, she held a place of deep honor in the Native tradition. She became the keeper of family memories, a voice of wisdom, and gentle comfort in times of sorrow. Margaret was the rock upon which her family stood.

Margaret graduated from Keota High School before earning a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in education from Northeastern State University and continued her educational doctoral work from Oklahoma State University. During her 45 years as an educator, Margaret taught at Talihina, Pryor, and Chouteau public schools, as well as Sequoyah High School in Tahlequah and Riverside Indian School in Anadarko. She believed every child was a gift from God, and deserved kindness, encouragement, and someone who believed in them.

Thousands of students, parents, fellow teachers, and friends were forever touched by her patience, wisdom, warmth and unconditional love. Margaret felt teaching was her professional calling but being a mother was her life’s greatest joy. She loved her four sons- Jeremy, Casey, Seleetka, and Joshua-beyond measure. She sacrificed without hesitation so they would have every opportunity to succeed, often placing their needs above her own. Through every hardship and blessing, they remained the center of her world. She celebrated their victories, carried their burdens, encouraged their dreams, and never stopped believing in who they could become. Her love and example inspired her sons to develop characteristics of integrity as athletes, intellectuals, artists, leaders, protectors, and as Native men.

Jeremy and Joshua preceded their mother in death, a sorrow no mother’s heart should ever have to bear. Despite her grief, Margaret’s faith never wavered and neither did her love for her sons, who she believed were God’s greatest miracles in her life. They gave her purpose, filled her days with laughter and hope, and became the reason she found the strength to keep moving forward. Her son, Casey James used that strength to comfort, advocate, and never left his mother’s side during the last months of her life. One of Margaret’s greatest joys in later years was her beloved grandson, Faron Cason James, whose smile reminded her that love continues through every generation.

Margaret loved each day with steadfast faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Raised by parents whose lives reflected their love for God, she found strength in prayer, comfort in scripture, and peace in His promises. She loved reading Christian and spiritual books, watching movies, sketching whenever inspiration struck, attending school and sporting events, and spending joyful moments with friends.

Among God’s greatest gifts to Margaret, her long-time friendship with Rachel Green, who Margaret claimed as her sister. Their friendship was rooted in laughter, understanding, encouragement and unwavering support. Rachel’s friendship became a source of renewed happiness, peace, emotional strength and enriched Margaret’s life in countless ways.

Margaret also shared a special bond with her beloved nephew, Rayson James Dix, whom she dearly loved. Watching him grow into the man he has become filled her with pride and unconditional love.

Those who knew Margaret will forever remember the warmth of her hands, how she gently held your hand or embraced you with one of her unforgettable hugs.

She brought a peace that words cannot describe. Many believed she had a warm, compassionate, kind, and healing touch that flowed through her love of Christ from her wonderful heart.

Margaret was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Rayson and Betty Billey, a sibling, Rocky Billey, and by her cherished sons, Jeremy and Joshua James.

She is lovingly survived by her sons, Casey and Seleetka James, her treasured grandson, Faron Cason James; her brother, Nicholson Billey; her sister, Sylvia Dix; her nephew, Jamey Dix; daughter-in-law, Heather James; her chosen sister, Rachel Green; her ex-husband and father of her four children, Warren James; countless former students, fellow educators, nieces, nephews, cousins, and many dear friends whose lives were forever blessed by her presence.

Margaret honored her Native ancestry and ancestors with dignity, walked faithfully with the Lord Jesus Christ. devoted herself to educating generations of children and loved her family with every breath she was given. Margaret’s life reminds us to lift up those who are less fortunate, to assist with the burdens others may carry, and to give love to those we may encounter.

We believe Margaret’s ancestral spirits and the Lord gently called their faithful daughter home, where she now rests in the eternal presence of the Lord, has been reunited with her beloved parents, her precious sons, Jeremy and Joshua, and all her Native ancestors who walked before her. Though her voice has now become quiet, her lessons endure. Though her hands are now at rest, their warmth remains in every life she touched. She walked in the footsteps of her Native ancestors, followed the path of Christ, and left footprints of love for all who came after her.
