Marie Hawkins Galloway was born on February 17, 1924, in Edgerton, Kansas, the daughter of Berton Hawkins and Dycie Imhoff Hawkins, and departed this life on November 3, 2018 in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, at the age of 94. Services for Marie will be Friday, November 9, 2018, 2:00 pm at the First United Methodist Church, Tahlequah.
After marrying Basel Benjamin VanSchuyver, they moved first to Michigan and then to Tahlequah, Oklahoma. After the death of her husband Basel, Marie moved the family to Norman and then to Chickasha, Oklahoma. She received her Masters of Science in Family Relations, Child Development, and Resource Management at the University of Oklahoma. She taught home economics at University of Science in Arts of Oklahoma for three years, and then transferred to Tahlequah to teach at Northeastern State University for the rest of her career. While at NSU, she received the Outstanding Female Educator of the Oklahoma Education Association and was a member of the State Board of Mental Health. She was well liked by her students and liked and respected by colleagues. She was active in the United Methodist Church, serving as head of the Administrative Board, teaching Sunday School, and participating in the Women's Circles. Serving the Methodist Church was one of the joys of her life. She was also active in the American Association of University Women throughout her career.
She enjoyed spending time with her family, friends, cats, and dogs. She loved people, with a special place in her heart for all children. She liked sewing, cooking, and gardening. Orchids were her favorite indoor plants.
Marie was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, sisters, and husbands, Basel VanSchuyver, Sam Naifeh, and Ned Galloway.
Marie is survived by her children Jan M. VanSchuyver of Fayetteville, Arkansas; Susan A. VanSchuyver, Oklahoma City; Toni VanSchuyver, Folsom, California; Ben VanSchuyver, Tahlequah, and Kathy VanSchuyver, Tahlequah; and two grandchildren Annie and Katherine Kessler, Folsom, California. She lived at Go Ye Village, Tahlequah, for the last 20 or so years of her life.
Interment will be at the Tahlequah Cemetery after the memorial service at 251 W Fox Street, Tahlequah, OK 74464.
The family requests that those wishing to send an expression of love and sympathy to consider making a donation in Marie's name to the First United Methodist Church, 300 W. Delaware, Tahlequah, Oklahoma 74464. Flowers should also be sent to the First United Methodist Church for the service and Internment.
