Richard Walter (Rick) Matzen passed away in his sleep in the early morning hours of February 28th, 2017. From the smile on his face we believe he walked into the eternal dandelion patch with his old friends, Opus and Bill the Cat.
His life's passion was teaching Computer Science and making the best pickles the world has ever tasted.
Rick was born on May 12th, 1948 in Rochester, NY, to Virginia and Walter Matzen. He is survived by his wife Jan, his sons Mika and Ben, their spouses and children, as well as his sister Martha and his sister-in-law Linda and a large,
much-loved extended family.
Rick went back to school after having his two sons and received a BS from the University of Central Arkansas, as well as an MS and a PHD from Oklahoma State University. He was a professor of Computer Science at
Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, OK for 18 years.
In lieu of flowers Rick asks that donations be made to Greenpeace, a non-profit organization that he has supported for much of his life.
His family will be hosting a memorial at their home in Tahlequah on Sunday, March 12th, 2017. Please contact his family for details.
If Rick had one last thing to say it would be, "If I don't see you in the future, I'll see you in the pasture."
