Robert S. Kostyk, was born on November 15, 1951, the son of the late Rita A. (Poliquin) and Michael S. Kostyk.
Friday January 7th this world lost a dear friend of our family. Robert Kostyk was befriended by my grandfather Roy Davis. He was a homeless man and my grandfather had a soft spot for him. Robert was living in a cardboard box behind Xpress Mart next to the NSU football field. He told Robert if he would help him with chores around the house he could stay in a little apartment on the property. This was 30 plus years ago. Little did any of us know how much Robert would touch our lives. He was an alcoholic and we butted heads several times over the years but there has never been anyone that took care of me and my family like he did! He loved my grandparents and took care of them till the day they passed and continued to take care of all of us like we were royalty until the day, January 7th when he passed.
Robert took pride in his work. He mowed our lawns and kept our property pristine. He took care of our tools and equipment as if it were his own. If he broke it, he fixed it. He definitely left the wood pile a little taller. He was a talker. Some stories true, some questionable depending on if he was drinking that day or not. He didn't know the word "quit" or ever "give up". This was evident after he lost his leg in October 2014 and was back on the lawn mower the following March. He didn't require rehab to learn to walk with a prosthetic leg, Just sheer determination. He loved laughing at himself and with us, even joking with the kids and shaking his prosthetic leg at them telling them it was his puppet! He hated baths and loved tattoos and Marilyn Monroe (also pictured in his apartment with Grandpa and Granny).
Robert was our security officer at the "Davis compound". He knew our kids, their friends what they drove. He called us when the kids were acting out, or when we needed to "check in". Our kids were his kids and he was our Robert.
There is no way any of us will ever be able to repay him and he would never expect or ask for any of us to try. All he ever wanted to do was help us in any way he could. I wish I could have told him how much I appreciated and loved him even though I know he would have done all he did because he loved our family more than he loved himself. I didn't realize how someone could be so unselfish until I walked into his apartment and saw him laying there lifeless in his bed with pictures of my grandparents hanging on his walls. Never have I met a person that was more loving than Robert. He pissed us off more times than you can imagine but the man cared more about my family than anyone of this earth! All because my grandpa took a chance on him and gave him a purpose.
He was predeceased by onw brother, Richard "Roy" Kostyk. He is survived by three brothers, Michael S. Kostyk Jr., Walter J. Kostyk and Gary W. Kostyk.
Left to mourn his passing is his family, Dale and Betty Davis, Keith and Connie Davis, Kevin and Kathryn Davis, Eddie and Shirley Jackson, Rick and Davada Davis, Chelsea Davis, Ayden and Alyx Smith, Brian, Kaitlyn, Stella, Steve and Sam Davis, Brianna Justice, Devyn Rice and Jacob Justice, CJ, Brandon and Jeanie Stacy, Trevor, Skylar and Sadie Patton, Chandler Faulkner, Whitney, Eric and Ellie Callison, Tyler and Lacey Davis, Mandy Kinkead, Sam Jackson, BJ and Rachel Jackson, Julea and Josh, Keely, Lilly, Ella and Ruger Dunn.
