Steven Richard Smith the son of Samuel and Olga (Shaddox) Smith was born March 2, 1939 in Muskogee, Oklahoma and departed this life on October 8, 2017 in Muskogee, Oklahoma at the age of 78 years, 7 months and 6 days.
Steven loved his community and was very involved. He graduated from Tahlequah High School in 1957. He was instrumental in the Tahlequah Fire Department beginning and served from 1960-1986 before retiring. He began his postal career as a Rural Route Mail Carrier and retired after serving as President of the National Rural Letter Carriers Association. He was also past president of the Oklahoma State Firefighters Association. He was a recovery diver for Cherokee County and was a volunteer for the Habitat for Humanity. He loved riding his tractor, going fishing and helping anyone do anything. He was very political and loved to talk politics. Steve touched many lives over the years and will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. He also loved the get togethers with his class of 1957 family.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Shirley Pinson Smith; and his sister Dr. Mary Estelle Smith.
He is survived by a loving family which includes his children Kevin Richard Smith and wife Mary Kaye of Tahlequah, Karmen Rochelle Smith-Green of Tahlequah and Shannon Pinson of Broken Arrow; her son Christopher;his grandchildren Kerri Elizabeth Smith of Tulsa and Cooper Green of Tahlequah; his niece Ann Vanderberg of Austin, TX; special friend Barbara Cooper and her family Cindy Cooper, Ethin Cooper, Kyleigh, Henley, and Ariana Dreadfulwater. Many friends and other relatives also survive him.
