Velda Mae Hodnett, the daughter of Lesley Hobert and Stella Mae (Watkins) Upchurch was born July 22,1939 in Jack Creek, Oklahoma. She departed this life peacefully, surrounded by her family on December
10, 2017 in Tulsa, Oklahoma at the age of 78 years, 4 months and 18 days.
Velda was a hardworking woman who loved her family. She and her mother opened S&V Fabrics in 1968 with locations in Tahlequah and Stillwell. They ran the shops together for over 20 years before evolving from fabric only into a clothing store. They expanded in 1991, adding a Coweta location. Velda
genuinely loved people and enjoyed being able to help women look their best. She was a very caring woman who also enjoyed being a full time granny, spending as much time with her grandchildren as possible. She had a green thumb and could bring life to any plant. She enjoyed
spending long hours tending her garden with her beloved dog Jackie by her side. She cultivated the most beautiful flowers and vegetables. She was a fantastic cook who genuinely enjoyed cooking, but loved feeding people and the fellowhip that brought even more. She was passionate about the importance of education, proudly earning her Bachelors of Education. She instilled this importance into her children and grandchildren as well, always encouraging them to follow their dreams through education. She also greatly enjoyed traveling, fishing and watching basketball. Velda touched many lives over the years and will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brother Hobert Upchurch.
She is survived by a loving family which includes her husband of 60 years Wayne Hodnett ; her daughters Jean Parker of Tahlequah, Jana Muesegaes and husband Bob of Broken Arrow, Jill Crawford and husband Steven of Tahlequah;
her brother Herbert and wife Pat of Ardmore; her grandchildren Becky Shepherd and husband Shaun of Tahlequah, Marshall Moss and wife Sara of Broken Arrow, Dr. Heather Crawford of Stillwater, Michelle Dubbs and husband
Chris of Vancouver, WA, Erika Crawford-Samuels and husband Charlie of Tahlequah, Tara Parker of Tahlequah; and great grandchildren Maiya, Kilie, Elise, Tate, Jax and Trace. A host of nieces, nephews, friends and other relatives will also greatly miss her.
