Cherokee Denwalt

May 30, 1927 — March 12, 2021

Cherokee Beatrice Denwalt, the daughter of Tom and Charlotte (Hogshooter) Hubbard, was born May 30, 1927, in Proctor, Oklahoma. She departed this life on March 12, 2021, at the age of 93.

Cherokee attended the Sequoyah Orphan Training School in Tahlequah in the 1930s and 40s, and was a proud Cherokee Nation citizen.

She briefly worked at Cherokee Nation Industries but spent most of her life as a homemaker.

Cherokee never learned to drive, but she was adventurous. When you left her modest Indian home in Spade Mountain, it was with more than you started with. She was generous. She never knew a stranger, she was your friend. And while Cherokee was only 4 foot' 10 in stature, she was resilient and mighty.

Cherokee earned a blue belt in karate while she was in her 70s. She loved to read scripture. She loved to laugh visiting with friends and family. She loved her dessert and meal time, which was all the time.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Bill Denwalt; her son Donald Lee Hubbard; her sister Edna Ambrose, her twin sister Jesse Brooks and dear friend Bill Davidson.

She is survived by her daughters Colleen Beaver and husband Roger of Checotah, and Judy Jennings and husband Darreld of Stilwell; six grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Cherokee was honest, forgiving and full of life and all of ours are better for having her in it. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
