June 17, 1935 ~ April 26, 2021 (age 85)

Obituary

Doris Ruth Hood was born June 17, 1935 in Vinemont, Alabama, the daughter of Hubert Harvis Hood and Ruth Jane Hood (Owens). She passed peacefully from this earthly life on Monday, April 26, 2021 in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. She was 85.

Doris grew up in the panhandle of Oklahoma in the Gray community. She attended school in Perryton, Texas and later transferred to Balko Public Schools in Oklahoma where she graduated. Instead of attending college, she met her lifelong love and became a homemaker.

Doris married Paul Leroy Leatherman August 17, 1954 in Clayton, New Mexico because they did not want to take the required blood test in Oklahoma. Their witnesses were Belle May Leatherman and Ruth Jane Hood. It was a great choice to start their married life with their mothers, soon to be mother in laws. Doris did not know how to cook or sew, but she took Mildred Leatherman's Home Economics class in high school, and later they became sister-in-laws. She became an excellent seamstress and made all of her children's clothes, everything from dresses, shirts, pajamas, coats and doll clothes. She also used embroidery on blouses, pants, and dresses. In later years, she was offered the opportunity to sew for a local department store. She turned this down because she said she was too busy at home.

Besides homemaking, she could drive any tractor or truck on the farm. She worked cattle, took care of pigs, horses, chickens, rabbits and even processed the butchered meat as needed. Then she grew a huge garden that she harvested and canned for the lean winter months. She taught her children about Jesus and the Golden Rule and so much more. She loved to play games and even did so while in the hospital.
Doris claimed her biggest achievement was working as a Foster Grandparent at Sequoyah High School, she was known as Granny for 15 years, and it stuck. She worked with students in the library for about five years helping with research or tutoring in various subjects. She then moved to the Art Department and found her niche. She learned then assisted the students with basket-making, beading, making dolls, Dream Catchers, gods eyes, edible art, helping students clean and maintain their supplies, pottery, and glazing, because glazing was her favorite. Then she would bake their favorite things on their birthdays and holidays. The students loved her and she loved them as well. She always said I have many grandchildren.

Doris is survived by daughter Kathy Weese & husband John, daughter Karen Mullican and Joyce Leatherman, grandsons Brandon Leatherman, and Daniel Eli Mullican, granddaughter Ashley Leatherman, great grandchildren; Gabriel Leatherman, Brandi Leatherman, Christian Mullican, Matthew Keener, Stevie Knight and Jackson Knight, sister-in-law, Shirley Hood, nieces and nephews, and other family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Leatherman, her son, Keith Leatherman, parents, Hubert and Ruth Hood, brothers, Bobby and Kenneth Hood, granddaughter, Marla Leatherman, grandson, Christopher Linke, and son in law Richard Mullican.

A Visitation will be held on Thursday April 29, 2021 from 9 AM - 5 PM at the funeral home and a funeral service will be Friday April 30, 2021 at 10 o'clock in the morning at the Hart Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Glenn Winn officiating. Interment will follow at Park Hill Cemetery.
