Dorothy Frie

Dorothy Frie passed away peacefully on July 17, 2020 at Go Ye Village where she resided the past 1.5 years. She was born on April 4, 1923 in Toledo, Ohio to parents George and Helen Frie. Her parents and a brother, Charles Frie and a faithful friend, Dorothy Yandell have predeceased her. She leaves behind a sister, Jeannette Sheffield of Columbus, OH., also nieces and nephews Clifford (Pat) Sheffield Houston, TX; Diana (David) Willier, Lakeland, FL; Paul (Elena) Frie, Toledo, OH; Douglas (Tracey) Sheffield, Columbus, OH; Sue Sheffield, Aliso Viejo, CA and two grand nieces, Kristen (Anne) Sheffield, Columbus, OH and Megan (Dan) Crowley, Chicago, IL. She will also be missed by great friends Amy Ozturk and Paulette Wall.



Dorothy graduated from High School in Fort Wayne, IN, and earned a B.S. degree from Miami University, Oxford, OH, and an M.S. degree from the University of Wisconsin.

She taught four years at Westmar University in Iowa, and 26 years at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, OK., as a professor of physical education, retiring in 1983. She taught all sports skills, health education and coached women’s volleyball and tennis teams. She was an avid golfer, playing into her 80th decade. In addition, she enjoyed fishing and even built a15 ft outboard motorboat. It took 4 years, but she constructed and fiberglassed it by herself.



She was a staunch advocate for women in sports, being recognized as a Pathfinder by the National Association for Girls and Women in Sports in 2001 and Role Model Award from Tulsa University in 2003. Her other passion was as a volunteer tutor and contributor to the Adult Literacy Program at NSU.



Dorothy said, “The most important thing a person can have is an education.” Therefore, she endowed a scholarship fund for women at NSU who are pursuing a degree in teaching physical education and sport.
